The COMPLETE research project

COMPLETE - this acronym stands for CO2 post-injection monitoring and post-closure phase at the Ketzin pilot site.

From 2004 to 2017, research on the storage of CO2 in a deep saline aquifer was conducted at the Ketzin pilot site in Germany. The CO2 injection was successfully carried out between June 2008 and August 2013 and accompanied by one of the  most extensive monitoring programs in the world. As a follow-up to previous research-projects (e.g. CO2SINK and CO2MAN), the COMPLETE project has continued the research in Ketzin from January 2014 to December 2017.

With its focus on the post-injection and closure phase, COMPLETE has...

  • closed the complete life-time cycle of a CO2 storage site at pilot scale, for the first time ever
  • expanded knowledge on post-injection monitoring and long term site behaviour, and
  • provided first-hand experiences on site abandonment.

The work within the COMPLETE project was divided into three subject areas. COMPLETE was supported by a public outreach program, and by the information center at the Ketzin site.

COMPLETE lasted for four years (Januar 2014 - Dezember 2017). The project has received its funding from Germany Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) (Grant Agreement number 03G0842A).

It was further supported by industry partners from Germany and abroad, the Norwegian CLIMIT programme and the GFZ.
